How to make .WebMs and save the world!

Hello again fellow environmentalists! Did you reduce your carbon footprint from my previous blog advice?? Of course you did, and i bet you a vegan too! If you think that was all it takes to save humanity, then you have much to learn!

Today children, we will be learning about .WebMs!

If .gif is the nectar for nothing but dank memes, then .WebMs is the heavenly elixirs brought to us by the sorcerers of this unworthy worldwide connection (praise open source developers!)
For those of the yet initiated, ".WebM is an opensource, royalty-free, media file format designed for the web."

The benefits of this format includes:
  • Low computational power to enable playback on any devices, including low-power handhelds and tablets.
  • Light weight encoding
  • Simple and fast compiler
  • Highest quality real-time video delivery
  • Minimal codec profiles to encode .Webms on any website
Ever since the movement FlashRageQuit, we moved on to the more secure HTML5, as a result .Webm quickly took over and became everyone's favourite medium.

Ever wondered why youtube takes so little bandwidth and loads so fast?
.Webm

Ever wondered why Vimeo loads like garbage and can't buffer for shit?
Fuck knows why!!
(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

"Son, what are you reading again?"
"Cancer mom, personified cancer."

But here are the steps to make a proper working .WebM and save your lives!

Firstly you would need a encoder/converter, most tools are free and some plugins are available for Adobe premiere/media encoder.

Here is a Reddit link that gives you an ample amount of options. I will use one of the converter in that list for the following demonstration --> WebMConverter with ffmpeg.
It's extract ready, so just place it in any folder.

Note that h.264 mp4 is natively supported by most browsers today, so there's no need to actively convert to .WebM, unless you try to conserve bandwidth or space.

1. Prepare your video and export in .mov ( i use .mov because it can be made lossless and gives less artifact pains for conversion).

2. Open WebmConverter for Bakas

3. Import your .mov, make sure it has thorough playback and fps.

.4. Tick "Enable audio" if your video have audio. All the rest of these functions are quite self explanatory, and should be left untouched.

5. Some websites limit size e.g. 4chan - 3mb. So to keep your .WebM's quality relatively consistent, here is a graph you can use to determine the Bitrate you would like the output to be.

Output sizeBitrateFilesize
320x240 pixels400 kbps3MB / minute
480x270 pixels700 kbps5MB / minute
1024 x 576 pixels1500 kbps11MB / minute
1280x720 pixels2500 kbps19MB / minute
1920x1080 pixels4000 kbps30MB / minute

Under Advanced tab you will find ffmpeg multithreading tab, for normies, this function is reserved for multi core cpu processors, it increases rendering speed, but as far as i know, ffmpeg codecs can't support more than 2 core threadings, so it is basically moot.

6. Hit Export and go grab a bag of dorritos #rainforestlivesmatter.#saynotopalmoil #noonereallycares

Here is another option for you to convert .WebMs,using online converter

1.Online-coverter is an expansive service, can convert to many formats. the functions are roughly the same, but can not host.

How to make HD .Gifs

In this day and age, we as human beings need to do all that we can to reduce our carbon footprint and to save this planet from the inevitable doom and destruction of the human race.

Using .gifs for your cheap presentations and .webms for the less crappy works had to be the best mercy you shall bring upon this destitute earth, by not wasting everyone's damn bandwidth with a Youtube or VIMEO video of 10 seconds misery. /s /kappa

What am i even reading here.
But seriously, HD .gifs and .webms are the sweet nectars for our sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet internet. Whether to show off prestige portfolios or posting shit memes. You need to keep the files as small as possible while maximizing the quality of your output.

Here's a comparison:

Garbage
God Tier

I will now show you how to save humanity from yourselves in just a few simple steps!

To begin, HD .gifs works best in short seconds loops (0s 1s 2s 3s 4s and even 5s), it is not advised to spawn an entire 4min music video into a .gif (well you could, but why...)

The difference lies in the export function. Most people just use converters or the .gif function in their favourite video editor, which causes compression problems that can't be controlled, and will usually produce lackluster result.

Here we will be using Photoshop for our .gif exports:

1. Prepare your video with whatever editing software you use, most should have a image sequence export function. .Png is preferred here in case you would like to maintain your alpha layers for effects and transparency in the end result.

Note: Photoshop can also import .mp4, .avi and .mov format files aswell. But for best quality and control, it is best to import image sequences.

2. Open up Photoshop select Import --> Video Frames to Layers, head to the first image from your sequence folder, tick "Image sequece" and hit "Import".

3. At the framerate selection, keep it to your original source.

4. Photoshop has built-in animation functions.
You could access it via Windows --> Timeline. Here finish any touch-ups or by-frame organizing, but most likely you won't have to do anything.

5. Now go to File --> Save for Web, select GIF in the dropdown menu.

6. Depending on your upload destination, some sites might limit max upload size, in this case, use the Lossy slider to adjust your quality control. But since i'm here to show you HD .gifs, we shall set the slider to 0. Quality set to bicubic smoother (what this does is resampling the pixel dimensions, thereby causing a similar anti-aliasing effect. Often this does not affect the size of the export.)

7. Looping Options set to "Forever", let your .gifs suffer in eternity.

You could check the size and framerates to the left of the export panel.

8. Hit Save.

9. Success!
